When Should I Scarify My Lawn? Timing & Method
Scarifying removes moss and thatch, but doing it at the wrong time damages your lawn. Learn the best time to scarify in the UK and the right technique for each season.
Diagnose the Problem
Scarifying is brutal on a lawn — it rips out moss, thatch, and some healthy grass. Do it at the wrong time and the lawn can't recover. Do it at the right time and it bounces back thicker and healthier.
Spring (April–May)
The best time. Grass is starting to grow actively and can recover quickly. Ideal after moss treatment.
Early autumn (September)
The second-best window. Soil is warm, there's moisture, and grass has time to recover before winter.
Summer — avoid
Hot, dry conditions stress the lawn. Scarifying in summer can kill weakened grass.
Winter — avoid
Grass is dormant and can't recover. Frost can damage scarified soil. Never scarify in winter.
New lawns — wait
Don't scarify newly laid turf or seeded lawns for at least 12 months. The roots aren't established enough.
The Solution
If your lawn has moss or a spongy thatch layer, scarify in spring or early autumn using this method:
Kill moss first (if needed)
If moss is present, apply iron sulphate or a moss killer 7–14 days before scarifying. The moss turns black and is easier to remove.
Mow short
Cut the lawn lower than usual before scarifying. This lets the scarifier tines reach the thatch and moss layer.
Scarify in two directions
Go over the lawn in one direction, then again at 45° to the first. This catches more thatch and moss.
Remove all debris
Rake up or mow with a collector to remove all the pulled-out thatch and moss. The lawn will look thin — this is normal and temporary.
Overseed and feed
The lawn will have bare patches. Overseed with quality grass seed, apply a top dressing, and feed. Water well to help it recover.
Use the Grass Seed Calculator
Calculate how much grass seed you need to overseed after scarifying and fill the bare patches.
