Top Tips for Great Lawn Care

Mow only if absolutely necessary and only on a high cut. Stop mowing once temperatures consistently fall below 8°C and grass growth ceases.

1
The Sharp Blade Rule
A dull blade tears the grass, leaving a jagged edge that turns white/brown and is susceptible to disease. A sharp blade is the single biggest factor in a healthy, green lawn.
2
The 1/3 Rule
Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single cut. This prevents "scalping" and minimises stress.
3
Fertiliser is King
Use quality fertilisers tailored to the season (high N in spring/summer, high K in autumn).
4
Top Dressing
This is what separates the serious gardener from the casual one. Regularly applying a fine, sandy/soil mix improves surface drainage, levels the lawn, and encourages a denser sward.
5
Change Direction
During the high intensity cutting months, change the direction of cut on every 3rd or 4th cut. This will promote upright even growth and help reduce soil compaction.
6
Wetting Agent
Apply a wetting agent once a month from April to September to encourage water retention and protect against dry patch.

As our climate changes and seasons shift, some of these processes may move backwards or forwards by a few weeks, or depending on the weather, a whole month or more. Stay flexible and keep an eye on temperatures, precipitation, and humidity to give you a final steer on what to do in which month.
