What Is the Best Grass Seed for UK Lawns?

Not all grass seed is the same. Learn the best grass species and blends for UK lawns — whether you need a hard-wearing family lawn, a fine ornamental lawn, or a drought-tolerant sward.

Diagnose the Problem

The 'best' grass seed depends entirely on what your lawn is for. A family lawn that takes football matches needs different grass than a pristine ornamental lawn. Match the species to your use.

Family / hard-wearing lawn

Needs perennial ryegrass for toughness and wear tolerance. A blend of 80% ryegrass / 20% creeping red fescue is ideal.

Ornamental / fine lawn

Needs fine fescues (chewings and creeping red) and browntop bentgrass for a dense, fine, striped finish. Lower footfall only.

Shaded lawn

Needs shade-tolerant fescues and bentgrass. Standard ryegrass blends fail in shade.

Drought-prone lawn

Needs deep-rooted tall fescue and drought-tolerant blends for sandy, dry soils.

Sports turf

Needs a specialist sports blend with high ryegrass for recovery from wear, plus smooth-stalked meadow grass for durability.

The Solution

Once you've matched the blend to your use, success comes down to preparation and sowing technique:

1

Choose the right blend

For most UK family lawns, a premier landscape blend (80% ryegrass / 20% fescue) is the best all-rounder. For fine lawns, choose a formal fescue/bent blend.

2

Prepare a fine seedbed

Rake the soil to a fine tilth, remove stones and debris, and firm gently. Good seed-to-soil contact is essential for germination.

3

Sow at the right rate

New lawns: 35–50g per m². Overseeding: 25–35g per m². Use a spreader and the grid method (half east-west, half north-south) for even coverage.

4

Time it right

Sow in spring (March–April) or early autumn (September) when soil is warm and moist. Avoid hot, dry summer sowing unless you can water daily.

5

Water and protect

Keep the seedbed constantly moist for 2–3 weeks. Don't mow until new grass reaches 5cm. Protect from birds with netting.
