How Do I Identify Lawn Weeds? UK Identification Guide
Can't tell clover from daisies? Use this UK lawn weed identification guide to name the most common weeds, understand why they're there, and choose the right treatment.
Diagnose the Problem
Weeds in your lawn are a symptom — they appear where grass is weak, compacted, or undernourished. Identifying the weed tells you both the problem and the solution. Here are the most common UK lawn weeds:
Dandelion
Deep taproot, yellow flowers, fluffy seed heads. Perennial. Indicates compacted or thin soil. Treat with a selective herbicide.
Daisy
White petals around a yellow centre, flat rosette. Thrives in short, compacted lawns. Selective weedkiller or improved mowing and feeding.
White clover
Three-leaved, low creeping, white flowers. Appears where nitrogen is low. Feed the grass with nitrogen to out-compete it.
Creeping buttercup
Glossy yellow flowers, creeping runners. Loves damp, compacted soil. Aerate and improve drainage.
Plantain (ribwort & greater)
Ribbed leaves, tall seed spikes. Indicates compacted soil. Aerate and use a selective herbicide.
Yarrow
Feathery leaves, flat clusters of small white flowers. Thrives in dry, poor soil. Improve fertility and water.
Selfheal
Low-growing with purple flower heads. Loves damp, compacted conditions. Aerate and feed.
Moss
Not a weed but often treated like one. Loves shade, damp, compacted, acidic soil. Treat with iron, then scarify and address the cause.
The Solution
Once you've identified the weed, the approach is the same: treat the weed, then fix the underlying cause so it doesn't return.
Identify the weed
Use the guide above. If unsure, snap a photo and use our free Identify Grass & Weeds tool — it'll name it for you.
Choose the right treatment
For broadleaf weeds, a selective herbicide like Dicophar kills weeds without harming grass. For clover, feed with nitrogen first. For moss, use iron sulphate.
Apply at the right time
Treat weeds when they're actively growing (spring or autumn), not in drought or frost. Don't mow for 3 days before or 4 days after.
Fix the cause
Aerate compacted soil, feed thin lawns, improve drainage in damp areas, and prune for light in shaded spots. Healthy grass naturally resists weeds.
Overseed bare patches
After treating weeds, overseed any bare areas with quality grass seed so weeds can't re-establish.
